The arrangements move through swing, rockabilly, ska, reggae, and Eastern European threads, but always circle back to what makes IN EXTREMO recognizable. The lead single "Liam," with LAURA FELLA from FAUN on vocals, sets the tone for the rest.
The first "TRANQUILO" caught a lot of people off guard.
IN EXTREMO had always been about volume and spectacle, but that acoustic set showed there was more underneath. The sequel has been in the background ever since.
This time, they did not just play the old songs quieter. Many tracks are unrecognizable from their original forms, rebuilt in a small studio in Dornbirn, Austria, recorded live with almost no production tricks. The result is raw, direct, and leaves space for the band to actually play off each other.
Guitarist MICHA RHEIN described the decision as consistent with the band’s history of resisting expectations, saying a straightforward rock album following their 30th anniversary would have felt too predictable — “TRANQUILO II” instead shows a side of the band he doubts anyone would have expected, before returning to their usual sound afterward.
The guest list is not just for show. OLIVER "SATYR" PADE and NIEL MITRA from FAUN join the band both on the record and on tour, with JUSTIN CIUCHE on violin. JAN "MONCHI" GORKOW from FEINE SAHNE FISCHFILET trades vocals with MICHA RHEIN on "Störtebeker," with MAX BOBZIN on trumpet. DORO PESCH appears on "Feine Seele." LAURA FELLA from FAUN is on "Liam." Each guest brings something from their own world, and the collaborations actually change the shape of the songs.
Collectors will want the deluxe CD or the limited vinyl bundle for the bonus EP "Sternhagelvoller." The centerpiece is a new, extended version of "Sternhagelvoll," and the lineup is a who’s who of the medieval and folk metal scene: BEN from FEUERSCHWANZ and D’ARTAGNAN, LAURA and OLI from FAUN, TEUFEL from TANZWUT, ERIC from SUBWAY TO SALLY, MALTE from VERSENGOLD, PAT and ALBI from FIDDLER’S GREEN, CASTUS from CORVUS CORAX, DAVID from HAGGEFUGG, FABI from STORMSEEKER, and the full lineup of FABULA. It is a scene document as much as a song.
IN EXTREMO started in Berlin in 1995, building their sound from historical instruments and centuries-old melodies, but always with a rock backbone. They sold their first records themselves at medieval markets, long before the genre had a name. Now they are one of the few bands from that world recognized far outside it.
